Surviving the Dust Storms at Burning Man 2025

Resilience at Burning Man: Lessons from Camp Not a Cult – Surviving the Dust Storms at Burning Man

As you may have noticed — we’ve been in Black Rock City throughout all the dust storms at Burning Man 2025! 🏜️🔥

Every year, we return to the Black Rock Desert to co-create this incredible experiment in community, art, and radical self-expression. For the last couple of years, we’ve even been running our own silly theme camp called Camp Not a Cult. And yes, it’s just as weird, silly, and joyful as it sounds. Our camp is fun, playful, full of connection, and alcohol-free. 🪩⛺️🕺🧘‍♀️⚡️🎉

But this year the dust storms at Burning Man have already reminded us of one of the most important lessons of the desert: resilience.

Facing Extreme Weather and Dust Storms at Burning Man

If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably seen that Black Rock City was hit with some of the worst ever wind and dust storms at Burning Man. 🌪️

We came prepared, but nothing truly prepares you for 50 mph winds tearing through the desert. Shade structures collapsed, artwork was damaged, and in some camps, hours of setup vanished in seconds. Still, we learned (again) that sometimes all you can do is:

Secure your tent and shade structure as best as you can.

Put on your goggles and dust mask.

Dance it out in the dust storm. 💃🌫️

At Burning Man, Mother Nature is in charge. Every dust storm, heatwave, or unexpected rain reminds us of humility and the yogic philosophy of non-attachment.

Radical Resilience in the Desert

Burning Man isn’t easy. It’s not for those who need extreme comfort, predictability, or guarantees. Out here, you have to adapt to what nature brings you. Sometimes events get cancelled or don’t go as plan. Other times what you think is the “perfect” camp setup floods or gets ripped apart in the wind.

But as long as you still have your basic needs met, these challenges aren’t setbacks—they’re opportunities. Opportunities to practice resilience, surrender expectations, and embrace what is.

For those of us in recovery, this resonates deeply. At Camp Not a Cult, we know what it means to face unexpected obstacles. Living alcohol-free in a world that glorifies drinking already requires resilience, community, and creativity. Burning Man magnifies that lesson in every way possible. Our camp is composed of many of our past retreats guests, who have also grown their resilience and adaptability through the awesome outdoor adventures and yoga philosophy we share on our yoga retreats!

Why Resilience is the Heart of Burning Man

At its core, Burning Man is a test of human resilience.

The playa is an environment utterly unfit for human habitation—scorching sun by day, wild winds by night, alkaline blowing dust everywhere. And yet, year after year, tens of thousands of people return. Why?

Because resilience breeds freedom.
Because resilience creates joy.
Because resilience reminds us that even in chaos, beauty thrives.

Dust storms at Burning Man might block the view, but they also create greater opportunities for connection with our awesome campmates, spontaneous dance floors, and a real sense of perspective on the problems in life. After all, we are here voluntarily! We signed up for this and knew it was a risk. We can’t really complain when we are privileged enough to come be here and do this in the first place!

Every challenge becomes an invitation to practice non-attachment: Can you stay present? Can you laugh through it? Can you keep creating, even when everything falls apart?

The Joy of Surrender Through Dust Storms at Burning Man

At Camp Not a Cult, we’ve learned that surrender is not about giving up—it’s about letting go. When you let go of control, the desert has a way of gifting you something better.

This year, our camp was tested, but our spirit wasn’t broken. If anything, it grew stronger. Together, we laughed, supported each other, and turned chaos into celebration.

So yes—Burning Man is weird, dusty, unpredictable, and often uncomfortable. But it’s also one of the greatest classrooms for resilience and joy on Earth.

✨ We’re still excited for what’s next. The dust storms and rain may come and go, but our spirit remains unshakable. Would you ever come out here and dance with us in the desert?
